Hydraulic spreaders are among the most versatile tools in vehicle extrication and structural rescue. With two powerful arms that open and close, they can widen gaps, lift heavy loads, pull wreckage and, with attachments, perform limited cutting.
The working principle
A spreader is essentially a hydraulic cylinder driving a linkage mechanism. When high-pressure fluid from a pump (engine-driven or integrated electric) enters the cylinder, the piston extends, pushing the arms through a carefully engineered joint system that multiplies force at the tips. Reversing the valve retracts the arms. The force at the tip can exceed tens of kilonewtons, while fingertip control allows operators to nudge wreckage millimeters at a time.
